“Navigate A Different Trail” was more than a tag line. It was a call to experience a truly unique editorial adventure. Readers and advertisers responded with excitement.
A direct-mail piece was sent to a list of targeted customers to drive them to the magazine website. The piece capitalized on J Rations’ pioneering format. Readers answered with a flood of visits to the website, posts in the forums and emails. Today, readers pride themselves on having the complete J Rations library of issues.
Advertisers responded to our marketing call to “Navigate The Possibilities,” demonstrated with an avant-garde media kit. A print brochure supplemented with an advertiser-focused CD-ROM supported our promotional claims by showing, not telling, what made the J Rations’ publishing model genuinely unique. Advertisers responded by purchasing more than $22,000 in ad space in a magazine that had yet to be printed and on a CD-ROM that had yet to be manufactured. A comprehensive digital media kit was later placed on the website.
